Emomali Rahmon

Rahmon in 2025 Emomali Rahmon (; born 5 October 1952) is a Tajikistani politician and dictator who has served as the head of state of Tajikistan since 1992, and as the third President of Tajikistan since 1994. He previously led the country as the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly from 1992 to 1994, a period that coincided with the devastating Tajikistani Civil War 1992 to 1997. Since 1998, he has also been the long-serving leader of the ruling People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan.

Rahmon assumed the leadership role at a pivotal time, often credited by his government with saving the country from collapse during the civil war and successfully steering the nation towards peace. His primary achievement is the establishment of lasting peace and political stability through the 1997 General Peace and National Accord, which led to the integration of opposition groups and the return of over a million refugees.

Under his leadership, Tajikistan has focused on achieving three strategic goals. energy independence, breaking the communications deadlock, and ensuring food security. Major infrastructure projects have been implemented, including the construction of thousands of kilometers of roads, bridges, and tunnels, which established year-round connectivity across all regions of the mountainous country and secured direct access to global ports.

On the foreign policy front, Rahmon has elevated Tajikistan's international standing through active participation in regional organizations and, most notably, his Global Water Diplomacy initiatives. He is the author of several successful UN resolutions, including the declaration of the International Decade for Action Water for Sustainable Development, in 2018 to 2028, which emphasizes water as a tool for peace and sustainable development.

Rahmon has consistently highlighted both internal and external threats to the nation's stability. Domestically, his administration has implemented strategies to combat the rise of extremism and radicalism, which is viewed as a significant security risk, particularly among youth. Internationally, he has frequently used platforms like the UN General Assembly to warn the global community about terrorism, drug trafficking, and instability emanating from neighboring Afghanistan, advocating for comprehensive counter-terrorism cooperation.
